DIY Pom Pom Wall Hanging: A Playful and Plush Decor Idea

Pom poms are delightful and versatile embellishments that can add a touch of whimsy and texture to any space. These fluffy, playful accents are perfect for creating unique and eye-catching wall hangings that can brighten up your home with a touch of handmade charm. In this blog post, I'll guide you through the process of creating your own DIY pom pom wall hanging, so you can add a splash of color and fun to your decor. Let's get crafting!

Materials You'll Need:

  • Yarn in your desired colors
  • A pom pom maker or a piece of cardboard (for making your pom poms)
  • Scissors
  • A wooden dowel, branch, or driftwood (for hanging your pom poms)
  • A tapestry needle or a large-eyed sewing needle
  • A long piece of string, twine, or cord (for hanging your wall hanging)

Step 1: Choose Your Color Scheme

Before you begin making your pom poms, decide on a color scheme for your wall hanging. You can opt for a single color for a monochromatic look or choose a mix of complementary or contrasting colors that suit your space or personal style. The choice is yours!

Step 2: Make Your Pom Poms

To create your pom poms, you'll first need to wrap your chosen yarn around a pom pom maker or a piece of cardboard. If you're using a pom pom maker, follow the manufacturer's instructions for creating uniform and fluffy pom poms. If you're using a piece of cardboard, follow the steps below:

  1. Cut a rectangular piece of cardboard approximately 2-4 inches wide, depending on the desired size of your pom poms.
  2. Hold the end of your yarn against the cardboard, and then wrap the yarn around the width of the cardboard multiple times until you reach your desired thickness. The more times you wrap your yarn, the fuller your pom poms will be.
  3. Carefully slide your wrapped yarn off the cardboard, maintaining its shape. Cut a separate piece of yarn, about 12 inches long, and tie it tightly around the middle of your yarn bundle, leaving two equal-length tails. Double knot the yarn to secure the bundle.
  4. Use scissors to carefully cut through the loops on both sides of your yarn bundle, creating the fringe of your pom pom. Trim any uneven ends to give your pom pom a round, uniform appearance.

Step 3: Repeat and Assemble

Repeat step 2 to create additional pom poms in your chosen colors. Once you have all your pom poms ready, it's time to assemble your wall hanging.

Cut a long piece of string, twine, or cord to your desired wall hanging length, leaving extra length at both ends for hanging. Thread a tapestry needle or a large-eyed sewing needle with one end of your wall hanging string.

Starting at one end of your wall hanging string, use the needle to thread the string through the center of your first pom pom. Pull the pom pom down to the desired position on your wall hanging, and then tie a small knot in the string just above the pom pom to hold it in place. Continue this process, adding pom poms to your wall hanging at equal intervals and securing each one with a small knot.

Step 4: Attach Your Wall Hanging to a Dowel or Branch

Once you've added all your pom poms to your wall hanging string, it's time to attach the string to your chosen dowel, branch, or driftwood. Tie the ends of your wall hanging string to your dowel or branch, ensuring that the pom poms are evenly spaced and hang at the desired height.

Step 5: Hang and Enjoy Your DIY Pom Pom Wall Hanging

With your pom pom wall hanging now complete, choose a spot in your home where it can add a pop of color and texture to your space. Use nails, hooks, or adhesive strips to secure the dowel or branch to the wall, and enjoy the playful and plush charm of your handmade creation.

DIY pom pom wall hangings are a fun and budget-friendly way to add a touch of handmade charm to your home decor. With endless color options, you can create a custom wall hanging that perfectly suits your style and taste. So gather your materials, let your creativity shine, and have fun crafting your very own pom pom wall hanging. Happy decorating!
